2009 Pascual Toso Malbec

Argentina, Maipu Valley

Buy a bottle for your friend, or a case and hand them out to everyone! Malbec is one of those wines that everyone seems to like but is also crazy cheap. Loaded with great fruit, the Pascual Toso is one of those wines that tastes like it's twice the price. This wine is almost too easy to drink so make sure it actually gets to the person you bought it for and not poured into your glass (although hey, you deserve it!).

2007 Pillow Road Vineyards Pinot Noir

USA, California, Russian River Valley

If you're gonna splurge, splurge on this! Pinot Noir is a fantastic gift wine because no matter what the giftee likes, they will most likely dig Pinot Noir. From the folks at high-end cab producer Ladera, comes a light yet fruit filled Pinot Noir from the Russian River Valley. Elegant but friendly, this is a great gift wine.

2005 August Cellars Pinot Noir

USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley

We heart Oregon for a zillion reasons, but their Pinots are definitely one of the top! It’s a light red with soft and subtle fruit. These wines are very similar to the Pinot Noirs of Burgundy, France. Oregon Pinot Noir floats in that in-between land where you can drink it with heavy fish, like salmon or tuna, but also wash down chicken, turkey and even delegate steaks. Go Oregon!

2008 Bodegas La Cartuja Priorat

Spain, Priorat

Priorat is the up and coming badass wine region in Spain. It comes from the mountain of Catalonia, near Barcelona. Typically, these wines start around $30 a bottle but this one is coming in crazy affordable! Loaded with great, juicy yet medium, fruit flavors from Garnacha, Syrah and Cabernet Sauvigonon, this red will make the big bold wine fans happy on T-Day without overpowering all the amazing food.

Sokol Blosser Evolution Oregon White

USA, Oregon

There are a lot of good, unique, white wines that will totally kickass on the Turkey table this Thanksgiving including, Pinot Gris, Muller Thurgau, Semillion, Riesling and others. Since the entire world now has ADD we decided to pick a wine that has all of these grapes! Hell yeah, another bitchin’ wine from Oregon, this is a blend of a nine different white grapes. The wine is medium body with tropical fruit flavors but this crispness that keeps you coming back for another glass.

2010 Domaine Berrod Fleurie Beaujolais Nouveau

France, Beaujolais, Fleurie

Made from organic grapes, this is bit more of a 'boutique' Beaujolais Nouveau from a small producer in northern Beaujolais. The grapes from this one come from the appellation of Fleurie. It drinks more like a typical Beaujolais but still has a nice, light and fruity vibe. Did we mention it's perfect Thanksgiving wine?

2010 Georges DeBoeuf Beaujolais Nouveau

France, Beaujolais

These are the guys that popularized Beaujolais Nouveau and made it an international marketing sensation. That being said, the wine is very standard Nouveau, (light, fruity and fun) and can be found in almost any wine shop or grocery store.

2010 Domaine des Cotes de la Moliere Moulin a Vent Beaujolais Nouveau

France, Beaujolais, Moulin a Vent

This is the real deal Beaujolais Nouveau. It's made from organic grapes and unlike the other Nouveau wines, it will last for months in the bottle so you can bust one out after the new year. The also don't add any additional sulfites, for the full-on natural wine effect.

2005 Pedroncelli Winery Dry Creek Valley Mother Clone Zinfandel

USA, California, Sonoma County, Dry Creek Valley

Dry Creek Valley is known for wines with deeply concentrated fruit flavors that pack a punch but are still easy to drink, and this one is no different. The wine is partially made with grapes from the original vines, which were planted over 100 years ago! "Mother Clone" refers to the fact that the rest of the grapes are children of the original vines. This Zin is jammy and bright red with bold fruit flavors. All in all you get a whole lotta wine for your money from this super cool winery.

2009 Alois Lageder Pinot Blanc

Italy, Trentino-Alto Adige

These guys make really cool wine! Alois Lageder is a family owned winery in Northern Italy that recently transitioned to biodynamic (super-mega organic) farming. They've been making wine for almost 200 years in the region, and their whole line of wines is stellar. This white wine is straw in color and drinks light with a really nice, bright acidity. If you like Sauv Blanc or Pinot Grigio, you'll love this! Plus, it sports a screw-cap so you'll have easy and fast access to the good stuff!

2009 Yalumba Y Series Viognier

Australia, South Australia

Aussie Viognier is cool stuff! The Viognier grape originally comes from France's Rhone Valley but found its way Down-under and is producing some killer wines. One whiff of this bad-boy and you get really awesome floral aromas. The wine is medium in body with good fruit flavor. Drink it with Thai food or chicken.

2008 Clos La Coutale Cahors

France, Cahors

A strong entry from the OG Malbec producer. Cahors has been making Malbec since way before the folks in Argentina, and these French Malbecs taste very different from their South American counterparts. The wines of Cahors are light, gritty and earthy reds. Deep and inky in color they have a strong acidity that goes well with pork or lamb dishes.

2007 Ninety Plus Cellars 4 Shiraz - Viognier

Australia, South Australia, McLaren Vale

It came in first place at the April 2010 Wine Riot and it sits as the top red wine for the Oct 2010 Wine Riot. From Australia, this is a blend of mostly Shiraz (red grape) and a touch of Viognier (white grape). It's traditional in France's Rhone Valley to blend these grapes, and the Aussie's figured out it works quite well for them too. Deep purple in color, this wine is dark and juicy. Slug with grilled burgers, sip with steak or just crack a bottle and watch the leaves turn color.

2009 Château de la Ragotière Muscadet

France, Loire Valley, Muscadet

Ladies and gents, it's time for everyone to start drinking Muscadet, and lots of it! This white wine from the west coast of France is light, refreshing and pretty damn cheap. It's made to go with the local cuisine of shellfish and other delicious sea creatures. This is a wine that's made for us New Englanders and what we like to eat most! Oysters

2006 Domaine Gautier Chenin Blanc

France, Loire Valley, Vouvray

We found this wine at a Vouvray tasting dinner at Clio in Boston. If you aren't familiar with Clio, it's the kind of restaurant you only visit when someone else is paying. It's not cheap. That's why it was an interesting match for wines from Vouvray, because most are less than $20 per bottle.

The Vouvrays we tasted, which are all made with 100% Chenin Blanc (whites) from France's Loire Valley, were awesome with the food and this one stood out. The Vouvray de Gautier is off-dry, which means it's somewhere between sweet and dry. It's medium to full in body with flavors of apricot, pear and honey.

Couples: this is the perfect wine if your opinions split between dry and sweet. It has a little something for both of you and is also a great cocktail wine.

This wine pairs with chicken or fish, but is also perfect with Chinese, Thai or Indian food.

2005 Domaine Schlumberger Les Princes Abbes

France, Alsace

Here in New England we're in that hazy time of year where it's no longer summer but it's also not quite fall. It can be a sunny 85 degree day then quickly slip into a brisk and cool evening dipping into the 40s. It's hard enough to remember a jacket let alone figure out which wine to drink.

Fear not, we've got you covered! Alsatian Pinot Blancs are the zip-off pants of the wine world. The 2005 Domaines Schlumberger Pinot Blanc "Les Princes Abbés" is crisp enough to quench your thirst during the heat but it has enough body to help warm the cool nights.

Hailing from vineyards near the Germain border this wine has a great minerality to it. Along with some subtle flavors of green apple this wine works as a cocktail but truly shines when guzzled with food.

We highly suggest pairing this wine with some aged gouda, anything chicken or that sweater you spent hours digging from the depths of your closet.

NV Cristalino Rose Cava

Spain, Penedes

Jaume Serra was relaxing last Tuesday in his home 20 miles south of Barcelona when he heard a faint rumbling off in the distance. The noise troubled him. He held his hand up to his ear and cocked his head towards the west trying to make out the sound. It turned out the faint grumble he heard was half a million whining, heat-stroked, Bostonians from 3,639 miles away. He knew he had to do something, so Jaume, being the humanitarian he is, dredged up 2.5 million bottles of Cava from his caves 50 feet under ground and Fed-Exed them to the US. His Cristalino Rosé Cava is the perfect way to beat the heat. Served extra cold, you can enjoy this bottle’s vibrant raspberries, strawberries, and minerals alongside some fresh fruit or just hold the freezing bottle against your face.

2005 Capezzana Conti Contini Sangiovese

Italy, Tuscany

As evidenced by this past week, Boston weather is always at one end of the spectrum. It's either sunny and hot, or freezing, dark, and pouring. It's for this reason we chose the Capezzana Conti Contini Sangiovese. This red will keep you warm, but in the off chance that the sun comes out again, its lighter style, vibrant plum and strawberry fruit, and easy drinkability won't make you sweat. Pair this bottle up with some Teriyaki chicken, Parmesan cheese, or a friend to complain to about having to get your winter parka back from the storage facility in Southie.

2006 Michael David Wines 7 Deadly Zins Zinfandel

USA, California, Lodi

It's America's birthday so pull out the barbeque, douse some briquettes and toss a match as you sip a big, juicy American wine. The 4th of July is the biggest outdoor grilling day of the year, but considering the recent weather, we picked a bottle that is delicious rain or shine.

The 2006 7 Deadly Zins is your liquid accompaniment to all things grilled. Not only does it have a catchy name, it also delivers in the flavor department. Raspberries slap your palate, followed by smoky, spicy, chocolaty, espresso-like flavors. This is one wine you wouldn't want to mess with.

Made from Zinfandel and partially blended with some Petit Verdot and Petit Sirah, all from California's Central Coast, this wine boasts an alcohol level of 14.5%, getting you toasty enough to party like the Founding Fathers would have wanted.

Drink liberally with BBQ'd salmon, grilled veggies, hamburgers and a sky filled with fireworks.

2005 Bodega Norton Lo Tengo Torrontes

Argentina, Mendoza, Lujan de Cuyo

This is your last weekend to drink fruity, elegant, and refreshing wines before you drink nothing but butch wines with your dad on Father's Day. Don't take this weekend for granted, get the 2005 Lo Tengo Torrontés. This white is a honeyed, peachy, citrusy, and floral monster; a real hedonist's utopia. Even with all this going on, it remains dry, crisp, and light bodied. It's perfect for drinking on a deck in the sun or next to a space heater and a 150-watt light bulb wishing you were on a deck in the sun.

2005 Gerard Bertrand Pic Saint Loup

France, Languedoc-Roussillon, Pic Saint Loup

France's association with great wine is stamped onto our consciousness as surely as is the knowledge that Santa Claus is fat or the Tooth Fairy creepy. Too often, though, wine buyers assume that this connection means that they can't drink French wine because it's too hard to understand, too pretentious, too expensive, etc. But at it's core, French wine is none of these things: it's all about simple, everyday drinking.

Based in the sunny, rustic Languedoc growing region, Gerard Bertrand has been producing approachable, inexpensive, and most important, killer, vino for the better part of two decades. The son of a vineyard owner, Bertrand is a champion of the idea that wine is not about obscurity and pretense. His are wines to be drunk with gusto: drink'em now and drink'em often.

The coolest wine in M. Bertrand's portfolio is sourced from the windy little district of Pic Saint-Loup. A blend of the Languedoc's four traditional grapes, (Syrah, Mourvedre, Carignan and Grenache), this is a no-foolin', baller bottling for half the price of most of the wines from this region. Look for notes of blueberries and savory, meaty herbs. This wine is a food lovers best friend, so make sure you find yourself some grub before you pop the cork on this guy.

Drink liberally with roast pork, bunny rabbit, or your favorite root vegetables at your next dinner party.

2005 Hook and Ladder Chardonnay

USA, California, Russian River Valley

There is a lot of prejudice in the wine world. New ABC drinkers (Anything But Chardonnay) are popping up all over the place and it has to stop. Can't we all just get along? Here is the peace offering that will end this wine prejudice once and for all; the 2005 Hook & Ladder Chardonnay.

This is probably the most tasteful American Chard out there. It prominently displays its ripe apple and pineapple fruit with a bit (but not too much) oak in the background, adding a subtle vanilla flavor without the buttery qualities people tend to associate with Chards. It is sure to make anyone that swears that they hate Chardonnays an avid Chardonnay advocate.

In buying this wine you also have the added benefit from buying from one of the coolest winemaking families ever, the DeLoach family. In 2003 they sold the DeLoach winery to a larger company and started Hook & Ladder in honor of their grandfather (founder of the DeLoach Family Winery) who was a Tillerman (the guy that steers the back of a fire engine) for the San Francisco Fire Department.

2005 Bodegas Castano Monastrell

Spain, Yecla

Here you go, an oldie but a goodie. The 2005 Castano Monastrell. Monastrell being Spanish for Mourvèdre. I was first introduced to Castano with the 2003 vintage. It was incredible and only 6 BUCKS! Since then its popularity has increased and now it's $9.

Even with the price increase it is so worth it. In fact you should be ashamed of yourself for only paying 9 dollars. We wish there was some sort of digital, Paypal tip jar for the farmers in Yecla, Spain that have enabled us to get rich, juicy, blackberry, chocolaty, meatiness in a medium bodied bottle of red for $9!

2005 Bodegas Victoria La Pardina

Spain, Carinena

As I am writing this, it is 34 degrees outside and an uncomfortable 60 in my apartment. Winter is coming and that means that we aren't drinking for fun anymore; we're drinking for warmth and body heat. When it's cold out you need liquor and spice to warm the blood as well as a little smoke in honor of the fireplace you wish you had. The 2005 Bodegas Victoria 'Pardina' from Cariñena, Spain has all those qualities and more. The spicy combo of 90% Tempranillo and the rest Cabernet Sauvignon delivers black currant liquor with some cedar and smoke leading to a long toasty, vanillin finish.

Pairs perfectly with a recipe I found for Garlic Lamb with Mushrooms.

2005 Albert Bichot Pinot Noir

France, Burgundy

Like the hard touring band that plays Earth-stopping concerts every night for decades but never seemed to make it to the stadiums or large venues, Albert Bichot is one of those Burgundy producers that somehow missed rockstardom even though they crank out awesome wines.

Albert Bichot has been producing wines in France's Burgundy region since 1831 and is still owned and operated by the Bichot family. They also practice "near-organic" farming, although like most French wineries, they didn't go through the certification process*.

To put things frankly, the 2005 Albert Bichot 'Vieilles Vignes' Pinot Noir is a kickass bottle of Pinot for a fraction of the usual Burgundy price. This Pinot has a lot of fruit with great cherry flavors, some tannin and a nice finish. While they are hard to find, this is a Burgundy you can pop open on a Tuesday night with pizza.

Drink with a slice of pizza, anything with goat cheese or a nice cut of beef.
